Customizing Item Buttons
TL;DR
Every item has its own button on the sale screen, and you can design it. Open the item, click Configure Menu Button, pick what text shows (the item name, the short receipt name, or your own words), add a picture, then drag and size everything in a live preview. Click Save in the editor, then Save on the item, and the new look shows up at the register.
When your cashier taps a category or a brand, TORO fills the screen with item buttons. Out of the box each one just shows the item's name. That's fine, but a button with a picture of the product, or a name trimmed to the part your staff actually say out loud, gets found and tapped a lot faster.
All of it happens in one editor. A full-size preview on the left shows you exactly how the button will look at the register, so you see what you're doing before you save anything.
Opening the editor
There are two ways in.
From the item. Open the item (you can find it in the Item Catalog, for example) and click Configure Menu Button in the Item Details section. The Set Up GUI Button editor opens with the item's name at the top.
From Quick Items. If the item is one of your quick items, right-click the QUICK ITEMS button to open the manager, click the item's tile, and choose Configure Menu Button. It's the same editor.
The item has to be saved before you can design its button. If TORO says "Cannot adjust System Items or unsaved items," save the item first and then try again. TORO's own built-in system items can't be customized.
Choosing the text
Under TEXT, pick what the button says:
- Item Name is the item's full name. This is the default.
- Short (Receipt) Name is the shorter name from the item's Short Name field, the same one that prints on receipts. It's handy when your full names run long.
- Custom lets you type whatever you like in the Custom Text box. Press Enter to start a new line, so you can put the brand on one line and the size on the next. Long lines also wrap on their own to fit the button.
Changing the text here only changes the button. The item keeps its real name everywhere else in TORO. If the text you picked is ever blank, for example a custom box you cleared, the button falls back to the item name so it's never left empty.
Two more controls shape how the words look:
- Text Color. Click Choose… to pick any color. Light text reads well over a dark picture, and dark text over a light one.
- Text Size. Slide it to make the words bigger or smaller.
Adding a picture
Under IMAGE, click Change Image… to pick a picture from your computer. Then use the Image Size slider to scale it. Go smaller to leave room for text underneath, or bigger to let a clean product shot fill the button.
Clear Image takes the picture off and leaves a text-only button.
If TORO tells you it can't upload the image because the share drive is offline, reconnect the share drive and try again. Item pictures are stored there so every register can show them.
Moving things around
As the hint under the preview says, drag the image or text to position it. Grab either one in the preview and drop it where it looks best, whether that's the name across the top, the picture in the corner, or anything else you like.
Saving, cancelling and starting over
When the preview looks right, click Save. Cancel closes the editor without keeping anything you changed.
Reset to Default puts the color, size and positions back to TORO's standard layout. It keeps your text choice and your picture, so it's a quick way to tidy a button you've dragged into a mess without starting again from nothing.
One more step if you came in from the item. Clicking Save in the editor doesn't finish the job there. Click Save on the item as well, or the new look won't stick. If you came in from the Quick Items manager, there's nothing more to do, because changes there apply right away.
The look is saved with the item itself, so the button looks the same on every register in your store, whatever the screen size.
