The Customer Kiosk

TL;DR

The customer kiosk is a TORO screen your customers use on their own. They can sign in with the last four digits of their phone number and a PIN, check their rewards, see the cigars they love and the ones picked for them, browse what you have in stock, and send an order to the counter. Your staff can use it too. A row of buttons along the bottom lets them start a tab, build an order, reset a customer's PIN, or open the Owner Dashboard, and each of those asks for an employee login first.

A regular walks in and heads for the humidor. Before they get there, they tap Sign In on the kiosk and see their points, their favorite cigars, and a list of cigars they haven't tried that people with the same taste love. They add three to an order, tap one button, and a ticket prints so someone can pull them. The kiosk takes care of all that while your staff are busy at the register.

Setting Up a Kiosk

The kiosk runs on its own computer, usually a touchscreen near the humidor, and it fills the whole screen. When that computer opens TORO, it goes straight to the kiosk and skips the register. If you want a kiosk, ask TORO support to set that computer up as one. See Getting Help and Support.

The Welcome Screen

At the top of the welcome screen is your store's logo (or your store's name if no logo is set), with the line "Welcome in — sign in below to earn rewards on every visit." Under that are three large cards:

  • Sign In: View Rewards and Recommendations. This is for customers who already have an account.
  • New Here?: Join our loyalty program today. Customers use this to sign themselves up.
  • Cigar Lookup: Details on any cigar we carry. Anyone can use it, whether they have an account or not.

Along the bottom is a row of staff buttons, covered in The Staff Buttons below. In the top-right corner are an IP button and an X. Tapping the X closes TORO, so it asks for an employee login first.

Signing In

When a customer taps Sign In, the Customer Login screen opens with two boxes:

  • Last Four of Your Phone Number
  • Your PIN Number

There's no button to press. The note under the boxes says it: "You sign right in once both are filled out." If two customers share the same last four digits, the PIN tells TORO which one is signing in.

If nothing matches, the customer sees "Account could not be found. Ask an employee for assistance." The screen also says "If you don't have a PIN number yet or forgot yours, please have an employee help you out!" To help them, use Reset Customer PIN (see below).

The Customer's Account Screen

After signing in, the customer sees their own screen. It shows their name across the top, their membership level (or "Ask us how to become a member!" if they aren't a member), and how long it has been since their last visit.

Rewards and Stats

  • Rewards shows a progress bar toward the customer's next reward. If the customer isn't on a rewards program, it says "Rewards Program not active. Let Store Owner know if you are interested." To set up or change a program, see Setting Up Your Rewards Program.
  • Your SMoKING Stats shows three numbers: how many different cigars with us all-time they've had, how much of our current humidor explored, and, in gold, how many cigars waiting for you! they haven't tried yet.

The gold number has a See Them button next to it. Tapping it opens the Cigar Finder with every cigar they've already bought hidden, so they only see cigars that are new to them. They can narrow that list with the filters. Reset Filters clears the filters, but the cigars they've already tried stay hidden.

The Four Columns

  • Your Top Cigars: the customer's favorites from the past year. Each one shows when they last had it, such as "Last had 12 days ago."
  • Picked For You: Favorites of smokers who share your taste. These are cigars bought by customers whose buying looks like theirs, limited to ones this customer hasn't tried.
  • Shop Best Sellers: Our most popular cigars you haven't tried.
  • Your Order: the cigars the customer has chosen so far.

The recommendation lists only show cigars you have in stock. A new customer won't have much to show yet, so the columns say so. For example, Picked For You says "We are still learning your taste. Check back after your next visit!"

The Stock Dots

Each cigar in the three recommendation lists has a colored dot at the right, under a small STOCK heading:

  • Green: 5 or more on hand
  • Yellow: 3 or 4 left
  • Red: only 1 or 2 left

The Cigar Finder shows the same dots in its Stock column. It also lists cigars that are out of stock, with a gray dot.

Ordering From This Screen

Each cigar in the lists has a + button to the left of its name. Tapping it adds that cigar to Your Order, and an × removes it. This on-screen order holds up to eight cigars. When the customer is ready, they tap Order My Items. The button shows how many cigars are on the order, for example Order My Items (3). The order is placed with their account already attached (see What Happens When an Order Is Placed below).

To order more, or to find something that isn't in the lists, the customer taps Browse & Search Everything. That opens the full order builder.

The Buttons Along the Bottom

  • View My Favorites opens the customer's full favorites. It stays locked ("Must Complete Profile First!") until they've filled in their required profile details.
  • Complete Profile shows how complete the customer's profile is, and it turns red while required details are missing. Tapping it opens a screen where they can add details like their Birthday and Anniversary, which you use to send birthday and anniversary offers.
  • My Cigar Finder opens the TORO Cigar Finder with the customer's own taste profile already applied: the sizes, strengths, prices and countries they usually buy. They can loosen or tighten the filters from there. On the kiosk, the finder doesn't show the buttons for switching to another customer, and it never shows your costs.
  • Reset PIN lets the customer get their PIN by text. They type their 10-digit phone number, then tap Create New PIN, and TORO texts them a four-digit code to enter before they choose a new PIN. Resend Current PIN texts them the PIN they already have. This only works with a cell phone. A landline number gets "We can only setup a PIN by text messaging it to your cell phone. Sorry!", and for those customers you use Reset Customer PIN (see below).
  • Sign Out takes the customer back to the welcome screen.

Cigar Lookup

The Cigar Lookup card lets anyone look up a cigar without signing in. There are two ways to find one:

  • Type the number on the shelf tag in the Cigar Number box and press Enter. This only works if you've assigned your cigars to shelves (see Inventory Locations). A shelf spot holding more than one cigar can't be looked up this way.
  • Tap Search by Name or Barcode and type at least three letters of the name, or scan the barcode.

The details show the cigar's size, strength, country of origin, wrapper and description. Order Items starts an order with that cigar on it, and I'm Done goes back to the welcome screen.

Building an Order

The order builder opens from Browse & Search Everything on a customer's account screen, from Order Items in Cigar Lookup, or from the staff row's Build Order button. On the left, under Add Items to Customer Order:

  • A search box: "Scan a barcode or type the cigar name (3 letters or more)." Pick a result to add it.
  • My Usual Cigars adds a cigar from the customer's favorites. If nobody has signed in yet, it asks them to sign in first.
  • Change Quantity and Remove Item work on whichever cigar is selected in the order.
  • Staff shelf code (example: A-12): when staff are helping, they can type a shelf code here, or just scan barcodes. This box takes barcodes first, and the cursor returns to it after every action, so staff can scan one box after another without touching the screen.
  • Open Cigar Lookup opens the lookup described above.

As cigars are added, a running line shows the item count and the total. Along the bottom are Staff Only: Find Item (which first asks "Is an employee available?" and then needs an employee login), Place My Order, and Cancel.

What Happens When an Order Is Placed

If nobody is signed in when Place My Order is tapped, TORO asks "Would you like to link your rewards account to this order?" If they say yes and it asks who is looking up the account, they tap Customer and sign in with their last four digits and PIN. If they say no, TORO asks for a Name for order? instead.

After that, the order prints on your receipt printer with an order number and the customer's name, so your staff can pull the cigars. The customer sees a message saying their cigars are being grabbed and that someone will meet them at the counter. If a staff member built the order, the message uses that employee's first name. The message also tells the customer to have their ID ready. If the customer has a rewards account, the message tells them how many points the order could earn. If they don't, it tells them joining is free.

New Here? Signing Up

The New Here? card lets customers join your loyalty program themselves. They enter their phone number on an on-screen keypad, then their name and a 4-digit PIN (twice). Email is optional. For the full walkthrough, see Signing Up a New Customer. Accounts made on the kiosk are regular customer accounts, and changes made there appear in the Account Change Log.

The Staff Buttons

Every button in the bottom row asks for an employee login, so a customer can't use them.

  • Start Tab switches this computer to the register so an employee can ring up a sale. The kiosk shrinks to a thin bar at the top with a Back to Customer Interface button. Tap it when you're done to bring the kiosk back.
  • Build Order opens the order builder so a staff member can put together an order for a customer.
  • Reset Customer PIN is how you help a customer who forgot their PIN or never had one. Type the Customer's 10-Digit Phone Number, or tap the magnifier to find the account by name. When TORO finds the account, it shows "Resetting PIN for:" and the customer's name. Enter the New 4-Digit PIN and Confirm New PIN, then tap Save New PIN. The customer can sign in right away with the last four digits of their phone number and the new PIN.
  • Owner Dashboard opens your Dashboard on the kiosk computer. It needs a login with Dashboard access.

Tip: if Reset Customer PIN says "No account found with that phone number" for a customer you know is in the system, more than one account may share that number. Use the magnifier and pick the right person from the list. Then see Merging Duplicate Customers.

If Support Asks for Your IP

When you call TORO support about a network problem, they'll usually ask for two numbers. On the kiosk, tap the IP button in the top-right corner, next to the X. A small IP Addresses window shows both:

  • This Computer: the kiosk computer's address on your store's network.
  • Database: the address of the computer TORO gets its data from, which is usually your main station.

Read both numbers to support. The button only displays them and doesn't change anything.
