Credit Card Processing Setup

Set up your merchant account, configure your terminal, and start accepting credit cards with TORO.

Setting Up Your Merchant Account

TORO works with Premium Tobacco Processing for credit card processing. They are a tobacco-friendly processor, which means no surprise account holds or shutdowns that tobacco retailers often experience with mainstream processors.

1

Contact Premium Tobacco Processing

Premium Tobacco Processing specializes in merchant accounts for tobacco retailers. They understand the industry and provide competitive rates without the surprise holds or account freezes that general processors often impose on tobacco shops.

2

Complete the Application

You will fill out a standard merchant application with your business details, tax ID, estimated monthly volume, and bank account information for deposits. The process typically takes 1-3 business days for approval.

3

Receive Your Terminal

Once approved, Premium Tobacco Processing will ship your credit card terminal directly to your store. Supported terminals include Dejavoo and PAX models. The terminal arrives pre-configured with your merchant account details.

4

Connect to TORO

We will help you connect the terminal to TORO during your onboarding session. This involves entering the terminal's IP address and port number into TORO's credit card settings. The process takes about 5 minutes.

Supported Terminals

TORO integrates with the following credit card terminal brands. Your terminal will be provided by Premium Tobacco Processing.

Dejavoo

  • Countertop terminal with touchscreen
  • Supports chip, swipe, and contactless (tap) payments
  • Ethernet and Wi-Fi connectivity
  • Built-in receipt printer
  • Reliable integration with TORO POS

PAX

  • Compact countertop design
  • Supports chip, swipe, and contactless (tap) payments
  • Ethernet connectivity
  • Fast transaction processing
  • Widely used in retail environments

Testing Your First Transaction

Before going live, run a test transaction to confirm everything is connected and working properly.

  1. 1

Ensure the terminal is powered on, connected to the internet, and displaying the idle/ready screen.

  2. 2

In TORO, go to Settings > Credit Card and verify the terminal IP address and port are configured correctly.

  3. 3

Ring up a small test item (or use a test SKU) and select 'Credit Card' as the payment method.

  4. 4

Follow the prompt on the terminal to insert, swipe, or tap a card.

  5. 5

Verify the transaction completes successfully in both TORO and on the terminal receipt.

  6. 6

Process a void or refund on the test transaction to confirm that reverse transactions also work correctly.

  7. 7

Check your merchant portal (provided by Premium Tobacco Processing) to confirm the transaction appears in your account.

Fee Passthrough Configuration

TORO supports credit card fee passthrough (also called cash discounting or surcharging), which allows you to pass processing fees to the customer on credit card transactions. This can save you thousands of dollars per year.

  1. 1

In TORO, go to Settings > Credit Card > Fee Passthrough.

  2. 2

Enable the fee passthrough option. This adds a small surcharge to credit card transactions to offset processing fees.

  3. 3

Set the surcharge percentage as specified by your merchant account terms (typically 3-4%).

  4. 4

The surcharge will appear as a separate line item on customer receipts for full transparency.

  5. 5

Cash-paying customers are not affected -- the surcharge applies only to credit card transactions.

  6. 6

Verify that your state allows credit card surcharging. Most states do, but a few have restrictions. Premium Tobacco Processing can advise on your specific state.

Result: With fee passthrough enabled, your effective credit card processing cost drops to $0. This is one of the biggest reasons TORO saves tobacco retailers money compared to other POS systems.
