Credit Card Fee Pass-Through
Card processing isn't free, and a lot of shops would rather not absorb that cost on every swipe. TORO can add a small percentage to credit and bank card payments — a "fee pass-through" or "convenience fee" — so the cost is passed along while your posted prices stay as cash prices. The math happens automatically at checkout and prints clearly on the receipt.
This is an add-on feature. If you don't see the Credit Card Fee Pass-Through box described below, it just needs to be switched on for your store — give us a call. Because the rules vary by state, the first time you turn it on (and any time you change the rate) the store Owner signs a short on-screen agreement.
Heads up: passing a credit card fee through to the customer (a "surcharge" in state law) is illegal in several states (including California and New York) and requires proper signage. It's your responsibility to follow your state's law. TORO assumes no liability for use of this feature.
Setting Up Credit Card Fee Pass-Through
You set this up once, and TORO automatically applies it to all four credit card payment types for you — you don't have to set each one up by hand.
On the main register screen, tap Owner Dashboard.
Tap Set Up System.
Tap Set Up Credit Cards.
Find the Credit Card Fee Pass-Through box. (If it isn't there, the feature hasn't been switched on for your store yet — give us a call.)
Check the Enable Credit Card Fee Pass-Through box.
In Fee Pass-Through %, type the percentage like a normal tax rate — for example, type
2.85for 2.85% (two decimals max). The note to the right reads it back as "= 2.85% on every card sale" so you can confirm you typed it correctly. In What to call it on the receipt, type the name customers will see, such as
Service Fee.In Legal disclosure text printed on receipt, leave the suggested wording or type your own. You can type
%FEE%anywhere you want the actual fee amount to appear.Tap Save.
The first time you turn it on, the store Owner is asked to sign a short agreement on screen — read it, sign with a finger, and accept. Only the Owner can do this. (You'll only be asked again if you change the rate, or turn the fee pass-through off and back on.)
That's it. The status line shows "Fee Pass-Through ON — 2.85% added to all credit card sales." From then on, every credit card sale — in person, keyed in, or a saved card on file — adds the fee automatically. Cash and gift card payments never have the fee added.
Changing the Rate or Turning It Off
Change the rate: go back to the same box, type the new Fee Pass-Through %, and tap Save. The Owner signs again, because the rate changed.
Turn it off: uncheck Enable Credit Card Fee Pass-Through and tap Save. The status line shows "Fee Pass-Through OFF — no credit card fee pass-through applied." Nothing is charged until you turn it back on.
Waiving the Fee on a Single Sale
At the register, the This Transaction menu has a Remove Credit Card Fee Pass-Through option (it appears as soon as the fee pass-through is turned on and saved — no restart needed). Choosing it waives the fee for that one sale. It requires manager authorization, so not just anyone can remove it.
Letting Specific Customers Skip the Fee
Some customers should never be charged the fee — your house account, a business partner, a longtime VIP. Tag them once and you're done.
Open the customer's account (Account Information). If it's a brand-new account, save it first.
Find the Tags box and tap the + (add) button.
Choose NO CREDIT CARD FEES from the list.
From then on, any card sale on that customer's account skips the fee — on every register, automatically. Remove the tag whenever you want it to apply again. It's opt-in and only affects the customers you tag.
Charging Certain Groups a Different Rate
Maybe you don't want to fully exempt a group — you just want them to pay less (say, a membership tier at 2%, or wholesale accounts at 0%).
In the Credit Card Fee Pass-Through box, tap Advanced — Customer Exemptions. (Turn the fee pass-through on and tap Save first, or the button will tell you to.)
In the Customer Exemptions window, tap Add.
Choose whether it's for an Account Tag or a Discount Level, pick the target, and enter the rate the same way as the main field — type the percent (for example,
2for 2%), or0to waive the fee entirely. The note next to the box reads it back so you can confirm it.Tap Save, then Close.
Whatever you set applies to all four credit card types at once.
A few things worth knowing:
Set it to
0to waive cleanly — no leftover penny, no stray line on the receipt.A discount level beats a tag. If a customer's discount level has a rate, that one wins — even over a lower tag rate. Among tags, the lowest matching rate wins.
The full exemption tag beats everything. A customer tagged NO CREDIT CARD FEES pays no fee, no matter what rate you set here.
How It Looks to the Customer
The fee prints as its own line on the receipt — for example, "2.85% Service Fee" — followed by the legal disclosure text you set. Customers see exactly what was added; nothing is hidden, which keeps everyone happy and keeps you compliant.
Things to Know
A walk-in with no account gets your standard fee — exemptions and special rates only apply when a customer is attached to the sale.
Changes take effect right away — the very next sale reflects them.
Existing customers aren't re-priced until you tag them or give them a special rate. Turning the feature on doesn't quietly change anyone.
