Humidor Health — Dew Point, VPD, and Your Health Score
TL;DR
For decades the whole hobby ran on two numbers — temperature and humidity, the famous "70/70." The problem is that relative humidity is a percentage, and a percentage hides how much water is actually in the air. Your hygrometer can read 72% at midnight and 65% at noon without a single drop of moisture moving — the temperature changed, not the moisture. The Humidor Tracking module already records two more readings your sensors report: dew point (when the air is about to turn into water on your glass and boxes) and VPD (how hard the air is pulling moisture out of your cigars). TORO rolls all four into one honest number — your Humidor Health Score, 0 to 100% — so you don't have to be a meteorologist to know if your stock is safe.

It's just TORO making more sense of numbers your sensors are already sending.
Why two numbers were never enough
Think of relative humidity as how full the air is — but "full" depends on temperature. Warm the air and the same water reads as less full; cool it and it reads as more full, even though not one drop moved. (Strictly, saturation is a property of the water vapor and its temperature — not something the air "holds," and not a sponge that changes size. The old "70/70" target, by the way, is now considered outdated; many serious shops run cooler and a touch drier, closer to 65%.)
That's why your humidity reading can swing several points overnight without anything actually being wrong — and why reacting to that swing can cause a problem. If you add humidity because the afternoon reading dropped, you've just set yourself up for a mold problem tonight when the room cools back down.
Two readings can't tell you whether a falling number means moisture is leaving or the room just warmed up. Dew point and VPD can. That's the whole point.
The four readings, in plain English
Temperature — how warm the air is. The big lever for beetles — warmth speeds up their whole life cycle and hatches the eggs already in the leaf — and for how fast your cigars age.
Relative Humidity — how full the air's sponge is right now, relative to what it could hold at this temperature. Useful, but it drifts with temperature even when nothing real changed.
Dew Point — the temperature at which the air is completely full and water starts condensing onto surfaces. This is the honest moisture number: it only moves when moisture truly enters or leaves. If your dew point is 60°F and any surface — the glass door, a cold wall, a metal hinge — drops to 60°F, water forms on it. Dew point is your early warning for water you can't see coming.
VPD (Vapor Pressure Deficit) — a temperature-aware read on how hard the air is pulling moisture from your cigars. Its real power is comparing two shops at different temperatures: 70°F/70% and 76°F/70% read identically on a hygrometer but aren't the same drying stress. Don't chase it as a separate dial, though — a cigar in good storage sits at a healthy, non-zero VPD (around 0.8 kPa). VPD near zero isn't "safe"; it's saturated, mold-prone air.
When temperature and humidity aren't enough
Here are real situations where the two numbers on the wall looked fine — and a problem was already brewing.
The afternoon sun on the display case. Morning: 66°F, 72% — looks great. By 11 AM the sun has warmed the case to 76°F and humidity reads ~51%, so you panic and add moisture. But nothing left the case — the dew point never moved. Warming the air just lowered how full it reads; every drop is still there. The right fix was to remove the heat — shade or relocate the case out of the sun — not soak it. (Reach straight for a fridge-style cooler instead and you can over-dry, since cold coils pull moisture too.)
The overnight sweat. The shop holds a lovely 70°F / 70% all day. At night the building AC drops the room to 62°F. The glass door cools below the dew point, and water condenses on the glass and runs onto the boxes nearest the door. The hygrometer across the room said "70%, all good" the whole time. Dew point would have flagged it.
The slow leak. A hair-thin crack opens in a walk-in door gasket. Humidity drifts down only a point an hour — easy to write off as "the humidifier needs a refill." But the dew point falls in a clean, steady line, which is the signature of net moisture loss — a leak, a spent or undersized humidifier, a lid left open, or the cedar still drying out. Humidity alone can't tell any of that from a half-degree temperature wobble.
Two shops, same 70%. One runs 70°F, the other 76°F. Same humidity reading, same confidence. But the warmer shop's air is over 20% thirstier — it's pulling moisture out of every cigar, every hour, every day. Its customers slowly notice the cigars feel drier, and the owner never understands why. VPD explains it instantly.
Your Humidor Health Score
You shouldn't have to be a meteorologist to know if your humidor is okay. So TORO takes all four readings and boils them down to a single, honest percentage. 100% is perfect, vault-grade storage. The lower the number, the more your cigars need you.
- 🟢 90–100% — Excellent. Everything dialed in and stable.
- 🟢 75–89% — Healthy. Good storage, minor room to tighten up.
- 🟡 60–74% — Fair. Watch it. Something is drifting out of the sweet spot.
- 🟠 40–59% — At risk. Act soon. Cigars are being affected.
- 🔴 Below 40% — Critical. A real danger — beetles, mold, condensation risk, or bone-dry. Act now.
- ⚪ Offline. No recent reading. The score is unknown, not "perfect."
The score isn't just an average — it's built the way an experienced tobacconist actually thinks. Each reading is scored by how close it is to ideal, so sitting dead-center earns full marks and drifting toward the edge costs points gradually. Dangerous conditions don't just lower the score, they cap it: drift into beetle territory (risk climbs from 72°F, and eggs hatch fastest when temperature and humidity are both above 72), sit in sustained mold-favorable humidity (75%+ RH), or enter condensation-risk territory (dew point closing on the temperature of cold surfaces like the glass door), and the number drops into the red no matter how good everything else looks.
And stability counts. A humidor holding a rock-steady 66% is healthier than one swinging between 64% and 74% but "averaging" 69% — because the swing is what splits wrappers. The score rewards steadiness and dings the bounce.
Every score comes with a plain reason — "94% — Excellent, holding steady" or "58% — Condensation risk: glass likely sweating overnight" — so you always know what to fix, not just that something's off.
Does altitude matter?
A little — but less than you'd expect, and it never changes your score. Your four readings don't shift with elevation: temperature, humidity, dew point, and VPD depend on temperature, not air pressure, so a humidor at 66°F/70% reads the same in Denver as in Miami. What does change is drying speed — thin mountain air pulls moisture a bit faster (roughly 10% quicker around 5,000 ft), so at altitude your humidifier works a little harder and needs refilling more often, and a dry reading is worth acting on a touch sooner. TORO estimates your store's elevation from its location and shows you that (small) effect, so you're never left wondering — but it never lowers your Health Score, because your cigars settle to the same moisture at any altitude.
A few habits that keep the number high
- Season a new humidor before you trust it. New cedar is bone-dry and will rob your cigars — bring it up to humidity empty for about two weeks (or until a seasoning pack or hygrometer shows it holding) before you load it. A day or two only wets the surface.
- Calibrate your hygrometer. Seal it with a saturated table-salt slurry — it holds 75% RH at room temperature, so a correct gauge reads ~75% after 6+ hours. Anything off is your gauge's error to subtract. (This checks the hygrometer, not the seal.)
- Aim a little cool and a little dry — 65–68°F is your friend. It slows beetles and gentles the chemistry of aging — but cool only slows mold; what actually starves mold is keeping moisture in check. And cool isn't a kill switch for beetles either — only freezing kills the eggs already in the leaf.
- When in doubt, err dry. Over-humidifying is the more common ruin: above ~70–72% RH cigars turn spongy, draw tight or plug up, and won't stay lit. Dry-box a wet stick for a day or two before smoking.
- Chase stability, not a magic number. A steady 66% beats a 70% that swings to 74% and back.
- Keep cigars away from the humidifier. Boxes pressed against the unit sit in damp, still air — the perfect mold pocket.
- Watch cold surfaces and overnight temps. Glass doors and thermal bridges — window frames, metal fixtures, uninsulated corners — sweat first; a well-insulated wall sweats last. Don't let the building AC swing the room down at night into dew-point territory.
- Check your seals. A slow leak doesn't announce itself; it just makes your unit work harder. A dollar-bill test on the door catches a bad gasket early: close the door on the bill and tug — slight resistance means a good seal; if it slides out freely, the gasket's weak.
- If you find a beetle, act fast. Quarantine the box and freeze it sealed, but stage it: a few hours in the fridge, then 0°F for at least 3 days, then back to the fridge for about a day before room temperature. The gradual ramp keeps wrappers from cracking. Then inspect the neighbors — one beetle is never just one.
Plume vs. mold — know the difference. Plume (or bloom) is traditionally described as a fine, white, crystalline dust of the cigar's own exuded oils — said to brush off as odorless powder and be harmless, even prized. Be aware this is scientifically contested: lab analyses of cigars believed to show plume have repeatedly found mold instead — including Aspergillus, Penicillium, and the dry-loving Wallemia sebi, which grows at humidor humidity (~69% RH and up). Early-stage mold is also white, powdery, and nearly odorless, so the look-and-smell test can't reliably tell them apart. Mold is more often fuzzy and raised, with color and a musty smell, and it stains when wiped. When in doubt, treat any white deposit as mold: isolate the cigar and wipe the spot — mold tends to grow back; a true crystalline deposit doesn't.
