If you’ve ever worked a closing shift and felt like the screen was burning a hole through your retinas, dark mode is about to become your favorite feature. TORO can switch between light and dark themes automatically — no buttons to press, no timers to set. It just follows the sun.
The Three Modes #
Head to Dashboard > Theme Settings and you’ll see three options for how TORO handles its appearance.
Auto (Recommended) #
TORO switches between light and dark automatically. During the day, you get the standard light theme. When the sun goes down, TORO goes dark. When dawn breaks, it switches back.
How does it know when sunset is? TORO uses your store’s location to look up the actual sunset time for your area. In the summer, it stays light later. In the winter, it switches earlier. It adapts to the seasons without you touching a thing.
If sunset data isn’t available for some reason, TORO falls back to a sensible default (7 PM).
Light #
Locks TORO to the light theme all the time. Good if your store has very bright lighting and you prefer the high-contrast look regardless of time of day.
Dark #
Locks TORO to the dark theme all the time. Popular with lounge-style shops, evening-heavy businesses, or anyone who just prefers darker interfaces. The dark theme uses deep backgrounds with light text — easy on the eyes in dim environments.
What Changes in Dark Mode #
When TORO switches themes, the entire application updates:
- Buttons — backgrounds and text colors adapt
- Labels and text — white or light text on dark backgrounds
- Dialogs and popups — all message boxes, settings screens, and input prompts follow the theme
- Tables and lists — row colors, headers, and selection highlights adjust
- Radio buttons and checkboxes — styled to match
- Dropdown menus — themed backgrounds and text
The transition is seamless. You don’t need to restart — when the theme switches, everything updates in place.
Setting It Up #
- From the main screen, tap Dashboard
- Click Theme Settings
- Choose your mode: Auto, Light, or Dark
- If using Auto, choose your trigger: Sunset (uses your location) or Fixed Time (you pick the hour)
- Save — the change takes effect immediately
That’s it. Most stores set it to Auto/Sunset and never think about it again.
Fixed Time Option #
If you prefer a predictable schedule over sunset-based switching, Auto mode also supports a fixed time trigger. Set it to switch to dark mode at 6 PM, 7 PM, 8 PM — whatever works for your hours. It switches back to light at a fixed morning time.
This is useful if your store doesn’t have windows (so sunset is meaningless) or if you want the switch to happen at the same time year-round.
Things to Know #
- Store-wide setting. The theme applies to all users on a station. Individual employees don’t have separate theme preferences.
- No restart required. Theme changes are instant — the whole UI repaints when it switches.
- All dialogs are themed. This includes the modern message boxes, input prompts, ARM reports, and settings screens. If it’s a TORO window, it follows the theme.
- Receipt printing is not affected. Receipts always print the same way regardless of screen theme.
- Screenshots may vary. If you’re documenting your setup or showing something to support, be aware that screenshots will look different depending on which mode is active.
